Hospital and health system boards quickly adapted their governance practices as the nation went into shutdown mode in March 2020. Board meeting schedules, board retreats, planned agendas and continuing education sessions were upended. Previously scheduled board work, such as strategic planning, were postponed. As the pandemic continues with its many medical and societal implications, boards must thoughtfully consider and prioritize the most important areas on which to spend board meeting time in 2021.
The pandemic has emphasized the need for intentional board discussion and deliberation on numerous key items such as board and CEO succession planning, formation of new strategic partnerships, CEO performance evaluation, financial strategies and workforce needs. The presentation will identify discussion/decision items that should be on each board’s agenda during 2021. Ms. Russel will explain why each of these subjects is of prime importance to the board, and she will offer different approaches for the board to tackle this work.
Kimberly Russel, FACHE, has served as a health care executive for 38+ years. For the past 25 years, Kim devoted her energy and talents to serving as a health care CEO, first at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, Iowa and from 2008 to 2020, at Bryan Health in Lincoln, Nebraska. Earlier in her career, Kim served as Chief Operating Officer at the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas and in various executive roles at Iowa Methodist Medical Center (now Unity Point-Des Moines).
Kim recently retired from Bryan Health and formed her own boutique consulting firm, Russel Advisors, which allows her to dedicate her time to advising and assisting healthcare boards and CEOs. She also serves as an Advisor to The Governance Institute.
Throughout her career, Kim has been an active member of over 20 boards and has served as chair of ten boards. Kim currently serves on the Foundation for Educational Services board and chairs the Omaha branch board of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City.
Kim holds a Bachelor of Science in Management from Purdue University and a Master of Health Administration from Washington University.
