Disaster Recovery and Emergency Mode Operations under HIPAA
July 9 @ 8:30 am - 10:00 am MDT$160 – $320
With the recent natural disasters and hacking attacks suffered by health care entities, new attention is being paid to preparations for recovering from such disasters while protecting information assets. Our speaker, Jim Sheldon-Dean, will discuss the preparations that should be made by any entity with obligations to the public to protect the access to and confidentiality of information.
Jim will use the HIPAA Security Rule as the foundation for the framework of the preparations that must take place because the HIPAA framework and guidance provide a solid yet flexible foundation for any information security program. In natural disaster emergencies, health care services are key to an area’s recovery and cannot be safely interrupted. Using the HIPAA Security Role provides a flexible framework for protection of information and compliance with applicable regulations.
Our speaker will include planning steps for preparations to deal with typical emergencies and significant threats to the privacy and security of confidential information. Furthermore, he will explain the roles of leadership and support necessary during and emergency, so that staff will seek assistance when necessary and managers will be ready to help staff make information handling decisions correctly.
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:
- Prepare for information release prior to an event.
- Develop policy before a disaster that guides staff actions during a disaster.
- Educate staff on the policies and monitor compliance.
- Guide staff during an emergency when contemplating disclosures.
Compliance officers, privacy and security officers, health information management leadership and staff, information security, and patient relations, as well as staff that are involved in or responsible for patient and staff communications, information management, and privacy and security of Protected Health Information under HIPAA.
