Pharmaceutical availability and pricing have become ongoing issues in recent years.  Recalls and shortages of key medications have created significant problems for various healthcare facilities.  In addition, several medications have experienced steep and unexplained increases in pricing.  Pharmaceutical supply chain strategies can be leveraged to improve organizational financial performance, physician, nurse and staff satisfaction and patient safety.  Understanding key elements of purchasing, inventory optimization, and navigation of medication recalls and shortages, the medication supply chain can be better managed and developed into key initiatives.  Senior leaders can greatly influence the strategic factors and decisions that serve as catalysts for improvement of drug supply chain management leading to enhanced efficiency, reduced waste, cost control and improvement in patient outcomes.
