Ligature Risks: Ensuring Compliance with the CMS Hospital CoPs and TJC Requirements
February 26 @ 8:00 am - 10:00 am MST$160 – $320
This program will focus on the requirements for hospitals to prevent ligature risk and selfharm from patients that are suicidal. The Joint Commission (TJC) announced this is one of the top four focus areas. Additionally, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has provided requirements for hospitals to prevent ligature risk and self-harm from patients that are suicidal.
Our speaker will share tools and resources to help facilities and identify CMS and TJC updates that hospitals should make sure to implement. CMS updates includes what units need to be ligature resistant, what patient and environmental assessments needs to be completed and the policy and procedure requirements. TJC has 16 requirements to ensure compliance with their standards, which include psych hospitals, behavioral health units, general acute care inpatient units, outpatient units and emergency departments. Sue will also discuss the Zero Suicide Campaign and the TJC Sentinel Event Alerts on suicide.
At the conclusion of this session, the participants will be able to:
1. Identify the two CMS tag numbers that set forth requirements to prevent ligature risks for patients with suicidal ideations.
2. Discuss the Joint Commission requirements for hospitals to follow in order to prevent patients from self-harm including hanging or strangulation.
3. Describe the CMS recommendation for education in orientation, when policies change every two years.
All staff, nurses and providers on hospital behavioral unit, psychiatric hospitals, hospital emergency departments and on hospital units where suicidal patients are taken care of (ICU, medical-surgical units, OB and postpartum and outpatient areas).
