It’s Raining Cats, Dogs and Emotional Therapy Monkeys: The Legal Landscape of Service and Assistance Animals

Whether it comes from an employee or a member of the public, a request to bring an animal into a hospital often catches people off guard and leaves them unsure of how to respond. This session will explain the various laws at play when it comes to a request to bring animals into a hospital. Participants will learn the difference between important terminology, such as “service animal” and “assistance animal,” and will learn that the process to follow when receiving a request to bring an animal into a hospital depends on who is making that request.

- Examine coverage of Title I, Title II, and Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
- Describe recent legal cases related to requests for animals in the workplace, including hospitals.

Sara McCue is an attorney at Baird Holm LLP where her practice focuses on employment, ADA, and fair housing law. McCue represents and counsels housing providers, property management companies, educational institutions and the affordable housing industry. McCue received her juris doctor from the University of Nebraska College of Law where she was the editor in chief of the Nebraska Law Review and president of the Multicultural Legal Society and Black Law Students Association. Prior to that, she graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a bachelor’s degree in journalism.
